El Hefe Supermacho Taqueria has arrived to Mill Avenue in Tempe! I had heard about their yummy tacos and felt I needed to check them out for myself, so on Monday I grabbed a few co-workers and moseyed down to the restaurant for lunch.
The first thing we noticed when we walked inside is the cool decor and ambiance. The booths have a funky print pattern and the walls are lined in fresh wood slats. The bar takes up almost half of the interior, and is probably packed during the evening hours. We didn’t sample anything from their drink menu, since we were all working, but we sampled plenty of the food options. Everything is made fresh, and it was delicious.
For starters, we ordered some chips and salsa and the elote dip. The chips were served on a branded wood block and were accompanied by three house-made salsas in small mason jars – very cute. Then we tried the elote dip – which was so very delicious. What is elote dip you ask? According to the menu, it it’s made up of fire roasted corn, queso fresco, cotija cheese, cilantro and hint of chili de arbol. I could have eaten the entire bowl of dip by myself.
Most of us ordered tacos for our meal. I decided on the chicken tinga and the pork al pastor tacos. The chicken tinga taco had lots and lots of flavor and came with braised chicken, hint of chorizo, jicama relish, mango passion fruit salsa and lime creama. The pork taco was tender and juicy with braised pork shoulder, grilled pineapple salsa, cojita cheese and pickled fresno chili. I would definitely order these again, but there are several other tacos I would want to try next time too.
If you’re looking for a new taco spot to try out – El Hefe Tempe will not disappoint you!
