September is here and with it comes the beginning of a new season of exciting theatre presented by Tempe’s three outstanding theatrical companies: Childsplay, ASU Gammage and Stray Cat Theatre. This year, Childsplay is the first of the three to open its new season with a contemporary take on an old classic Robin Hood and it sounds like a real rip-snorter. In this version, which takes place time that is a cross between medieval times and the 21st century, Maid Marian is more like Katniss than the fair medieval maiden we’ve known in the traditional story. Robin’s band of merry men will be on hand and the Sheriff of Nottingham will be his old nefarious self, doing whatever he can to snare Robin and his homies. The audience will be encouraged to stand up and cheer for Robin Hood and Marian, and boo at the Sheriff and Prince John.
Childsplay has billed this Robin Hood as a “high octane adventure,” a “modern take on the classic tale” and “an exciting new way full of laughter and adventure.” We can thank this award-winning theatrical company for getting Tempe’s 2013-14 theatre season off to a rousing start. It opens Sunday, September 8 at 4 p.m. at the Tempe Center for the Arts and will run through October 6. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit http://www.childsplayaz.org/index.php.
