Mexican Food Favorites in Tempe

I am a Mexican food fanatic. Since moving to Arizona from a small town in Southern Colorado, I have been continuously searching for some of the amazing green chili famous in my hometown. My search is still ongoing, but in the meantime I have been able to try some great Mexican food in the process.  Tex-Mex and chain restaurants are all around, but do you know where do get some real Mexican food? I quickly realized that Arizona has many more styles of authentic Mexican cuisine to offer, and many of them are in Tempe! Some of my favorites include the following.

Rosita’s Fine Mexican Food on University and Hardy
This place is tucked into a corner next to Cornish Pasty and Cheba Hut, and has one of the most authentic atmospheres I have experienced at a Mexican restaurant in Arizona. The atmosphere created by the owners makes you believe you just may be south of the border. The food and service is phenomenal, and you get more than your money’s worth. The options are typical of any Mexican restaurant, but still so much better than other places that I can’t stop going back!

Restaurant Mexico on Mill Avenue
Restaurant Mexico offers a Mexico City-style menu, and with my limited college budget, I really enjoyed the prices here. One of my favorite things about this place is that green sauce is the default, which is not the case for any of the Mexican restaurants I have ever been to in the Valley. It’s spicy, authentic and the service was great. I have yet to go to any other restaurants that have served this style of Mexican food, so you’re in for a delicious surprise when you come here. If you are tired of experiencing the same-old Tex-Mex restaurants, this place will definitely be a great experience.

America’s Taco Shop (two locations: University Drive and Elliot Road)
America’s Taco Shop is a quick casual restaurant that serves authentic Mexican food. As the name implies, their tacos are outstanding but so are their burritos and tortas. My personal favorite is any item that contains al pastor, a citrus marinated, thinly sliced pork. Their salsas always taste fresh and their agua fresca drinks are delicious.
