I am a Mexican food fanatic. Since moving to Arizona from a small town in Southern Colorado, I have been continuously searching for some of the amazing green chili famous in my hometown. My search is still ongoing, but in the meantime I have been able to try some great Mexican food in the process. Tex-Mex and chain restaurants are all around, but do you know where do get some real Mexican food? I quickly realized that Arizona has many more styles of authentic Mexican cuisine to offer, and many of them are in Tempe! Some of my favorites include the following.
Rosita’s Fine Mexican Food on University and Hardy
This place is tucked into a corner next to Cornish Pasty and Cheba Hut, and has one of the most authentic atmospheres I have experienced at a Mexican restaurant in Arizona. The atmosphere created by the owners makes you believe you just may be south of the border. The food and service is phenomenal, and you get more than your money’s worth. The options are typical of any Mexican restaurant, but still so much better than other places that I can’t stop going back!
Restaurant Mexico on Mill Avenue
Restaurant Mexico offers a Mexico City-style menu, and with my limited college budget, I really enjoyed the prices here. One of my favorite things about this place is that green sauce is the default, which is not the case for any of the Mexican restaurants I have ever been to in the Valley. It’s spicy, authentic and the service was great. I have yet to go to any other restaurants that have served this style of Mexican food, so you’re in for a delicious surprise when you come here. If you are tired of experiencing the same-old Tex-Mex restaurants, this place will definitely be a great experience.
Mucho Gusto on University Drive
Mucho Gusto is known for its delicious guacamole with Grand Marnier liqueur. Many of the original dishes receive rave reviews, including the tortilla soup, which has a different twist to it. I’m not sure what part of Mexico the recipes come from, but they are different from most of the restaurants in the Valley. Come here to try a delicious new twist on Mexican cuisine that you may not be able to get anywhere else in Arizona.
