ASU Gammage ends its 2012-13 Broadway show series this week with a big hallelujah, the Broadway comedy smash SISTER ACT. Here we have another instance of a movie being reworked for the stage and what a perfect match it is. With a magnificent score SISTER ACT, features original music by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors), SISTER ACT tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime. In what has to be the craziest example of the witness relocation program, the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent! A reluctant Deloris Van Cartier dons a habit and becomes Sister Mary Clarence. Appointed choir director by the much out-of-tune nuns, Deloris/Sister Mary Clarence helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Her unconventional methods and selection of music are a source of much consternation for Mother Superior and much fun for the audience.
SISTER ACT promises to be a rousing good time and a fitting finale to another terrific ASU Gammage Broadway series. The show runs from June 25-30. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit http://asugammage.com.
