Can you feel it? Running season in Tempe is finally here! The morning temperatures are absolutely perfect for an early training run. And evenings are starting to cool off too. It’s the perfect time to pick a 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, or for those really ambitious athletes, a triathlon to start training for. No matter what your level of fitness, there’s a race that’s sure to get you walking or running this season! Here’s a list of my favorite races in Tempe to either participate in or watch from the sidelines to get motivated.
Soma Triathlon – The 9th annual Soma Triathlon, produced by Red Rock Co., kicks off the season on Sunday, October 21, 2012. Fans can cheer on athletes at Tempe Beach Park and Tempe Town Lake where the event takes place, starting with a 1.2-mile swim in Tempe Town Lake, a 56-mile bike course and a 13.1-mile run. Both fans and athletes can enjoy the scenic course, offering great views of the lake, ASU and the surrounding landscape of Tempe.
Lady Speed Stick Women’s Half Marathon & 5K – The Lady Speed Stick Women’s Half Marathon & 5K race, held on November 4, 2012, is the perfect race for mothers, daughters, sisters and girlfriends to get together for an unforgettable weekend in Tempe and support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The scenic half marathon course will take you from Old Town Scottsdale to Tempe Town Lake for an extraordinary finish-line party. For those looking for something less intense, the 5K race starts and finishes in Tempe Beach Park. A fun bonus – all participants will receive a designer goodie bag and half marathon finishers will be awarded with a one-of-a-kind medal with a removable center charm.
Ironman Arizona – One of my favorite sporting events to watch every year is Ironman Arizona, taking place November 18, 2012. This grueling, yet inspiring events features a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike and a complete marathon (26.2 miles) all in succession. This race is truly is sight to behold – awe-inspiring, emotional and spectacular all at once. Friends and families who come to cheer on their athlete can enjoy the great weather by strolling the shops along Mill Avenue, enjoying an urban hike up “A” Mountain or seeing one of the many exhibits on display at the ASU Art Museum.
P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon and 1/2 Marathon – Lace up your running shoes, or in this case your dancing shoes, for the 10th annual P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon and 1/2 Marathon on January 20, 2013. Having participated in this race for the past three years, I can honestly say that it’s one of my all time favorites. From the many musical acts along the course to the thousands of fans cheering you on – it’s a fun race in every way. The P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon and 1/2 Marathon returns this year with the two new start lines that were successfully debuted at last year’s race. The marathon course will start at Cityscape in downtown Phoenix and continue through to Scottsdale and Tempe. The half-marathon race begins in Downtown Tempe and continues through Scottsdale and Papago Park, finishing back in Tempe. And don’t forget to celebrate you accomplishment at the end at the post-race headliner concert at the finish line!
