I love finding a great new place to kick back and relax with friends. This week, you can check out a great addition to the Mill Avenue District: Handlebar Tempe.
I was able to preview Handlebar on Monday night, but it officially opens to the public today, Sept. 19. It’s the perfect fit for Tempe’s Mill Avenue. It has a cool, relaxed vibe that isn’t stuffy or pretentious. There’s a mix of bright white subway tile and reclaimed wood in the space and many of the seating areas feature long, communal tables to encourage patrons to chat with others.
The food menu is simple, featuring a variety of bratwurst, hamburgers, fries, pretzels and dipping sauces. The beer menu is impressive with 24 on tap and 24 in the bottle. There is an emphasis on beers that aren’t carried by every bar in town, including local brews from San Tan, Four Peaks and Mother Road Brewing in Flagstaff. Everyone in my party found something new to try and some found their new favorite beer. They also serve wine and they have a full bar.
The spacious patio is welcoming and comfortable. But, you don’t have to go on the patio to get a bit of fresh air. When the weather is nice, which is almost always is in Tempe, the Handlebar staff will open the glass garage door-like windows, letting a bit of the outside in.
Handlebar Tempe is owned by Julian Wright, the genius restaurateur behind La Bocca Urban Pizzeria & Wine Bar and Canteen Modern Tequila Bar.
This month, Handlebar Tempe, located at 680 S. Mill Ave, Tempe, will open at 3 p.m. daily and close at 2 a.m. Starting on October 1, they’ll open daily at 11 a.m. For more info, go to www.handlebaraz.com or call 480-474-4888. See you there!
